Training Update Week 34: Wherein it's time to start thinking about racing, (but not racing to start thinking about time)

A busier than usual period has meant that my blogging and podcasting has suffered for the last two weeks, although I have continued to maintain my marathon training despite the challenges posed by an increasingly demanding work-load.

So here’s how I went for week 34 of the training year which incorporated the tempo and long runs for week 12 and the track workout for week 13 of my marathon training program.

The Tempo Run

The plan called for a 16km (10 mile) run at my target marathon pace of 5:23min/km (8:39min/mile). I ran a very comfortable 5:12min/km average pace and felt like I could have gone on running forever. This felt great.

The Long Run

This was not so great. The plan called for 24km (15 miles) at an average pace of 5:29min/km (8:49 min/mile). I averaged 5:34, which is OK, but I felt pretty awful for most of this run. I just had very little energy for the last seven or eight kms.

I never run this sort of distance in the afternoon. However, this time I didn’t have a choice. I’d been burning the candle at both ends to finish a project for my work, and was getting up early in the morning to work on that instead of running. But, you don't know how good the good ones are unless you've had a few bad ones. So, I'm racking this one up to experience.

The Track Workout

This was a tough one. 10 x 400m sprints with 400m rest intervals. Target pace for the 400m sprints was 1:43.

Splits: 1:30, 1:24, 1:24, 1:22, 1:27, 1:26, 1:27, 1:27, 1:26, 1:19

I was stoked with these splits. At the time I didn't know how I was doing, and I felt as though I was getting slower each time. It turns out I maintained a pretty consistent pace and was able to go harder still in the last 400. A good start to week 13 of the program.

It's time to start thinking about racing, (but I'm not racing to start thinking about time)

I'm also at the point where my marathon journey is beginning to come to its end and the destination, the race itself, if fast approaching. So I'm beginning to start thinking about my race day plan and reviewing all the things I've been learning about pacing, nutrition, hydration, heart rate, percieved effort etc and distilling them into a plan that will see me to the finish line of my first marathon.

You'll notice that I omitted a time goal from that list of considerations. I'm still weighing up whether or not to set myself one. I have kept myself to three goals in my training for this event: To enjoy myself, to finish strong, and to not get injured. I've been seeing setting myself an arbitrary time goal above and beyond those three goals as something that would quite possibly prevent me from enjoying the race, and quite possibly impact upon my being able to finish strong and uninjured if I feel pressured by time to do something I'm not physically capable of. We'll see...

B-HAG Running Episode 13: Running with a cold

In this episode I discuss how we can get sick when we train, what to do when we do get sick and how to help prevent getting sick in the first place.

Training Update Week 33: Wherein I conquer a twenty mile long run, the common cold and set a new PR for the mile.

The Cross Training
I'm starting to really love swimming. This was the perfect way to end a hard working week last Friday. I mixed up some freestyle and breaststroke with some backstroke kicking. I covered 1000m in 28 minutes.

This was the first time I've used my stopwatch while swimming and this had the effect of stopping me from lingering at the end of each lap. I felt strong and as though I could have kept going for longer if time had permitted.

The Long Run
I DID IT! I actually hit my target pace for this long run!

This was the fourth of my 32km/20mile runs for my marathon training program. The plan called for 32km at a target pace of 5:41min/km. And I did it in exactly 5:41min/km! This is the first time I've managed to hit the average target pace.

I've been finding the long runs a hard slog, and any improvements so far have been very hard won. But even though I felt stronger on this long run than on any of the others, I was absolutely spent at the end of it. If I'd had to run another 10km, it would have been close to a death shuffle.

Lots of lessons learned on this run. I've been spending a bomb on gels, but the best long run I'd had prior to this was when I didn't used them and just had some cheap, run of the mill jelly snakes from the store. I did the same with this run, and I'm now a convert. The jelly snakes are easy to carry and eat on the run and obviously give me the energy hit I need (for a fraction of the price!). I also took some Endurolyte tablets, two every 9km or so. This augmented the hydration from the 2 litres/70 fl.oz. of diluted sports drink in the hydration backpack.

I woke up at 5am in the morning before this run, and my head really wasn't in the game. I didn't feel like I could do it. I sent out a quick tweet to this effect and within a flash I had a reply from Gordon H (aka @Disneyrunner). Gordon used some very kind words that had the effect of a mental kick up the backside. I went out with a renewed determination. Thanks G!

This online running community is a very special thing. I don't think I could do half of what I do without all the encouragement and motivation I receive from so many awesome people on twitter, dailymile and here via the blog. Thanks everyone.

The Cold
I began developing some cold-like symptoms last week, but they appeared to have abated by the weekend. They returned with a vengeance on Saturday evening though and prevented me from commencing week 12 of my marathon training until yesterday when I did my track workout. It did however give me some ideas for the next episode of the podcast which will include a section about what to do when you’re training for an event like the marathon and you come down with a cold that threatens to slow you down or prevent you from training all together for a while.

The Track Workout
A great track workout for week 12 of the FIRST program.
My cold had all but gone by Wednesday, and I felt confident to commence my training for the week.
The plan: 3 x 1600m with 400m rest intervals.
The splits: 6:33, 6:34, 6:47
Included a 3km warm up and a 1km warm down.
6:33 is a new PR for the mile!!

Training Update: Week 32 – Wherein I PB in the world’s largest road race

A slightly augmented training week again this week. I had an extra 10km last week, and 10km less this week. This was all part of accommodating the 40th annual Sydney City2Surf on August 8.

The Race
2010 City2Surf
Distance: 14 km
Time: 01:08:43
Average Pace 04:54 min/km

A new PB for this event, and the fifth time I have taken part in this iconic race. 82,000+ folks turned up to run the 14km from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach. After a cold start we had a glimpse of Spring with crystal clear blue skies and sunshine enough to leave a pinkish hue to my forehead! I turned up 60mins prior to the start and managed to get a prime spot at the front of the Red Pack. My timeliness cost me in the bladder dept as after the gun went off at 8.30am, my initial speed was due to my racing to the first available portaloo! (Only a 2 min detour required to relieve said bladder).
I ran by instinct as I discovered at the start line that my Garmin battery was dead. A blessing in disguise really - I got focus more on enjoying myself. The crowd was awesome, the vibe was great, and the views of the world's most beautiful harbour were spectacular as always. I had estimated a finish time of 67-69 mins and was bang on target (lucky I wasted two minutes in the toilet queue!). Met up with fellow dailymilers Andrew C. Eoin O. and Kirtsen afterwards.

I love this race. I'll be back next year and for many more to come.

The Track Workout
Plan called for:
1km in 4:24min, 2km in 9:08min, 1km in 4:24min & 1km in 4:24min. All with 400 metre rest intervals.
The Splits:
3km warm up
Then, 1km - 3:56, 2km - 9:01, 1km - 3:58, 1km - 4:16.
2km warm down
Worked bloody hard and felt bloody awesome!

The Cross Training
Stationary Spin Cycle
19 km 00:40 28.5km/h pace

First time on the bike in a couple of weeks. I’ve been focussing mainly on the rowing and swimming. I had a 10am start for work, so I took advantage, got to the gym, got on a spin bike and rode like a 'rabid monkey' (thanks for that phrase Gordon!). A good workout. Looking forward to doing this for real on the roads soon!

The Tempo
This week's plan called for a 10km tempo with 2km at 5:49min/km, followed by 8km at 5:00min/km.
The Splits: 5:27, 5:29, 4:58, 4:44, 4:43, 4:52, 4:57, 4:53, 4:48, 4:51.

Total for the week: 36km
Total fore the year: 1187km

Training Update Week 31: Wherein the training plan is supplanted for the week… mostly.

The Long Run - 32km
Not great, but not a disaster either. It was raining fairly heavily when I left home at 0-Dark-30. My shoes were soaked and heavy from the beginning. I'm sure this slowed me down considerably over the course of the run. They were like lead weights! The rain did abate however.

Took two litres of electrolyye drink along in the hydration pack and four gels. Drank water every 5km and took a gel every 45mins. Socks were soaked and very bloody when I took them off. An older pair of not-so-soft socks tore my feet up a little. There's a lesson there - invest in good socks!

Didn't feel as strong at the end of this run as I did last week. The target pace was 5:41min/km. I averaged 5:58min/km, although I was averaging 5:48 until about the 28km mark.

The Other Long Run - 24km
This was the run I was supposed to do this coming weekend, but because I’m running in the City2Surf, I brought it forward.

I like running at night, but I generally don't like doing long runs at night - I've found I don't perform as well as when I go running at dawn, which is strange when you think about it, because I should have a better nutrition/hydration base in the evening than in the morning.

I took two litres of water in the hudration pack, two gels (one at 45 mins in and one at 90 mins in) and for this first time also used some endurolytes (two tabs at the one and two hour marks).

I felt pretty good for most of the way, but I experienced some cramping in my calves which I wouldn't normally on a run of under 25kms. I put that down to doing this long run within only a couple of days of the 32km long run on the weekend.

Also tried out some very nice new running socks which were very good. Full report on those in the most recent B-HAG Running podcast.

The Joy Run - 8km
No plan, no paces. I haven't had a joy run like this for a long time because I've been single-mindedly focused on the marathon training. Just ran to enjoy it tonight - a final fling before the City2Surf on Sunday. Listened to Episode 31 of RunDiggerRun and was humbled and inspired by the story of CAPT Jennifer Harris, USMC.

Total for the week: 64km (record week!)
Total for the year: 1151km
